Background

San Mateo County Library’s Big Lift Little Libraries are popping up all over the County! Look for Big Lift Little Libraries in places where children and families could use a great book -- places where families hang out, places where they have to wait in lines, places where reading and books are great activities.

A Little Library is simply a birdhouse-size library where anyone can take home a book to keep, especially children who don’t have many books at home.

The goals of the Big Lift Little Libraries are:

Encourage a culture of reading in San Mateo County;
Increase access to books for children and families at the point of need;
Involve all of the county in The Big Lift;
Help create community support for The Big Lift initiative.

Through 500+ volunteers from Google, Genentech, Microsoft, SAP, Silicon Valley Community Foundation and Menlo Presbyterian Church, organized by Hands On Bay Area, over 150 Big Lift Little Libraries were constructed and filled with books for children by the program manager, the San Mateo County Library System.  Additional construction projects are planned -- let us know if you’re interested in participating in a build!
